Garment Pilling:

What is Pilling? Fabric pills occur as the result of normal wear and tear. Shorter clothing fibres on the surface of the garment become tangled together, and begin to clump resulting in the characteristic lint balls that are visible on your clothing.

How to prevent Pilling: Naturally we stress our clothing every time we wear it, so some pilling is always possible. However there are some ways to minimise this pilling by reducing friction against your garments.

  • Backpacks and handbag straps often cause this friction
  • A washing machine does not specifically cause pilling but it can speed up the process or worsen it.
  • First, always refer to the garment care label inside the garment.
  • Turn garments inside out. So it is the inside that rubs against other garments.
  • Fasten all zips, buttons and hooks. Hard objects can damage the clothing fibres.
  • Sort garments before washing to prevent heavier fabrics damaging your knitwear during the wash cycle.
  • Use a gentle wool cycle, or hand wash your garments.
